Summary: The Unit Manager assists with the direct supervision of all
resident care activities performed within the assigned unit/hall. He/she assists with coordinating nursing service activities with facility administration, community agencies, physicians, and representatives/families. He/she assists with the responsibility for nursing service compliance in accordance with facility policies and procedure as well as Federal and State regulations governing the facility under the direction of the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.

Professional Qualifications:
1. Is currently licensed by the State of Indiana as a registered or licensed practical nurse.
2. Preferably, has one or more years of demonstrated ability in nursing administration and/or supervision in a health facility.
3. Should possess good managerial skills and strong sense of responsibility.
4. Must possess a current health certificate/examination required by State agencies.
Required Skills and Abilities:
1. Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to apply basic principles of nursing care and teaching.
2. Demonstrates leadership ability and capability to work effectively with all levels of personnel.
3. Maintains an interest and knowledge of current trends and new developments in nursing and health administration.
4. Demonstrates interest and ability to work effectively with the community.
5. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
6. Demonstrate a willingness to work with the realization that resident outcome is determined by the quality of nursing care provided.
7. Maintain good working relationships with professional medical persons and have willingness to increase knowledge in nursing, through individual study participation in workshops and formal classes when available.
8. Possess skills in the assessment of nursing care needs of the residents.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Assist with planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, directing and managing the nursing services department under the direction of the Director of Nursing services.
2. Assist with developing and implementing methods for coordinating nursing services with other resident services.
3. Assist with implementing plans of action to correct deficiencies.
4. Assist with maintaining an effective quality assurance program.
5. Assist in planning, developing, implementing and maintaining resident discharge procedures and plans.
6. Participate in surveys and inspections by government agencies.
7. Participate in the interviewing and screening of residents for admission to the facility.
8. Assist in assuring that each resident’s attending physician(s) and representative/family, are promptly notified of any significant change in the resident’s health status.
9. Assist with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, evaluating and disciplining nursing services personnel of assigned unit/hall, as requested.
10. Assist with developing work assignments for nursing services personnel in keeping with specific nursing care needs of the residents.
11. Assure that nursing services personnel are not required to perform any duties or functions outside of their scope of practice.
12. Assist with reviewing personnel complaints and grievances and ensure that all personnel are treated consistent with policies and applicable laws.
13. Participate in planning, implementing, conducting, and scheduling orientation, training and in-service educational activities for nursing service personnel.
14. Maintain professional competence, as well as current license(s), through participation in continuing education programs, seminars, and training programs.
15. Monitor nursing services to ensure that residents’ rights and needs are met.
16. Assist in developing for each resident a preliminary and comprehensive assessment and written care plan that identifies the nursing and medical problems and/or needs of the resident and the goals to be accomplished for each problem and/or need identified.
17. Assist with implementing procedures to ensure that trained and authorized personnel operate nursing services equipment in a safe manner.
18. Attend and participate in various committees and meetings of the facility as assigned by the Director of Nursing and/or Administrator.
19. Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining safety standards, maintaining necessary transmission-based precautions for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases among residents and personnel, and procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment.

1. Ability to read and write in English, ability to communicate with residents, families, personnel and support agencies and ability to remain calm under stress.
